John E. Bailye President and CEO, EKR Therapeutics
Previously, John Bailye founded, chaired and served as CEO of Dendrite, a pioneer in the development of software applications for pharmaceutical sales force management. Under his leadership, Dendrite grew from $175,000 in annual sales in 1987 to more than $420 million in 2006. The company received wide industry acclaim and was ranked 44 among the 100 fastest-growing companies in the United States by Fortune Magazine in 2000. In May 2007, Dendrite was sold for nearly $800 million. At that time Dendrite was a publicly traded global company that employed nearly 3,000 people in approximately 60 countries, and its client base included the world's top 20 pharmaceutical companies. Originally from Australia, John has been a leading supporter of entrepreneurship and technology growth in New Jersey, having served as a founding member of the New Jersey Technology Council. He received the Golden Door Award from the NJ International Institute and was twice honored with Ernst & Young's New Jersey Software and Technology Entrepreneur of the Year
® award. In 2003, Business Review Weekly named him as one of the top 20 influential Australians in the United States. John is a graduate of the University of New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance, marketing, and business.
Adele C. Oliva Partner, Quaker Partners
Adele Oliva joined Quaker Partners (www.quakerbio.com) as Partner in June 2007. Previously Adele was a Partner at Apax Partners, which she joined in 1997 following her selection as a Ewing Marion Kauffman Fellow in Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship. At Apax, she co-led the Healthcare Group in the United States with a focus on specialty pharmaceuticals and medical devices/products. Prior to Apax, she held positions in marketing and business development with Baxter Healthcare in the company's Cardiovascular and I.V. Systems divisions. Adele's experience also includes positions with Ogilvy & Mather, where she was employed in the firm's office in Hungary, and with CoreStates Financial Corp., where she worked as a commercial lending officer and senior financial analyst. In addition to EKR Therapeutics, her experience as a Board member includes Prometheus Labs, SkinMedica, Esprit Pharma, Alliance Healthcare Solutions, ESP Pharma., and Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals. Adele is a graduate of Saint Joseph's University and earned an M.B.A. in Marketing from Cornell University, where she was awarded a Fried Fellowship.
Scott A. Perricelli Partner, LLR Partners
Scott Perricelli is a Principal of LLR Partners (www.llrpartners.com) a Philadelphia-based private equity firm with $620 million of capital under management that focuses on investments in IT, business services, healthcare, and financial services enterprises. Scott has over 12 years of private equity investment and investment banking experience and possesses industry expertise in healthcare, IT, and outsourced business services. Prior to joining LLR Partners in 2001, Scott was a Principal at Draper Triangle Ventures, the Pennsylvania-based fund of Draper Fischer Jurvetson. Previously, he worked at Advanta Partners, a private equity firm affiliated with Advanta Corporation. Scott began his career in investment banking at William Blair & Company, where he advised emerging growth companies on a variety of investment banking transactions. Scott holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and B.S. in Accounting from Bucknell University.
Steven St. Peter, M.D. Managing Director, MPM Capital
Dr. Steven St. Peter joined MPM Capital (www.mpmcapital.com) with experience from Apax Partners and The Carlyle Group, where his investment scope included both venture and buyout transactions across medical technology and pharmaceuticals. He began working at MPM in 2003 and was promoted to General Partner in 2005. Dr. St. Peter is board certified in internal medicine and was previously an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at Washington University and his residency and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his medical training, he was an investment banker at Merrill Lynch. He also holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Kansas. He is a Director of EKR Therapeutics, Helicos (NASDAQ: HLCS), Omrix (NASDAQ: OMRI), PharmAthene (ASE: PIP), Syndax, Xanodyne, and the New England Venture Capital Association, and previously served on the boards of Atugen and IDEA.
Zev S. Scherl General Partner, NewSpring Capital
Zev Scherl is a General Partner at NewSpring Capital (www.newspringcapital.com), a family of private equity funds focused on the Mid-Atlantic region. He possesses significant experience in principal investing, corporate management, and finance, focused exclusively in the life sciences and healthcare industries. Prior to NewSpring, he worked at Pequot Ventures where he orchestrated investments in emerging life sciences and healthcare companies. Previously, he was a member of the healthcare investment team of Behrman Capital where he originated, executed, and actively managed healthcare investments. Before entering private equity in 1997, Zev served as Senior Director, Strategic Planning, for Value Health, the largest independent pharmacy and mental health benefit management company. He also served as U.S. Manager, Pricing Policy at Merck & Co., and prior to that was in the investment banking group at Lehman Brothers. In addition to serving as a Director for EKR Therapeutics, Mr. Scherl is currently a board member for AppTec Laboratory Services, Scandius BioMedical, Inc., Nitric BioTherapeutics, and Immune Control, Inc. He received a B.A degree with honors in economics from Duke University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
S. Douglas Sheldon Managing Partner, ESP Equity Partners, LLC
S. Douglas Sheldon, a co-founder of EKR, is a co-founder and Managing Partner of ESP Equity Partners, LLC (www.espequity.com), a private equity fund with offices in New Jersey, Beijing, and Bangkok. Previously, in 2000, Mr. Sheldon co-founded ESP Partners LLC, the predecessor to ESP Pharma, a specialty pharmaceutical company acquired by PDL BioPharma in 2005. He has over 30 years of pharmaceutical and related healthcare experience, both internationally and domestically, including having served as Vice President of Strategic Partnership Development at Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals. Doug began his career with Pfizer, Inc., where he served nearly 17 years in senior international finance, marketing, country management, and regional line management assignments in South America and Asia. He left Pfizer in 1991 to form TTMC, Ltd, a venture company focused on healthcare and life sciences businesses in Southeast Asia. In 1994, he founded Indochina Healthcare Ltd (IHL) joint venture operations in Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Myanmar, merging TTMC's hospital products business in orthopedics and urology with the oncology and cardiovascular business of Hospira Inc. (formerly Mayne Pharma). Today, he continues to actively serve as an Executive Director and Chairman of IHL. Mr. Sheldon, who is fluent in Spanish, received his B.S. in Chemistry from LeMoyne College and M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from Syracuse University.
Robert P. Roche, Jr. Independent Director
Robert P. Roche, Jr., was named to the Board of Directors of EKR Therapeutics in October 2011 as an independent director. He came to EKR after holding positions of increasing responsibility in the healthcare industry in the United States and globally for more than 25 years. Immediately prior to joining EKR, Bob was Executive Vice President, Worldwide Pharmaceutical Operations at Cephalon, Inc., before its acquisition by Teva Pharmaceuticals. While at Cephalon, Bob was responsible for all commercial operations, including Sales, Marketing, Product Planning, and International. He initiated development of the company's U.S. and EU commercial infrastructures resulting in top-line revenue growth of more than $2 billion in a 10-year period.
Previously, Bob held several key positions at SmithKline Beecham during a 14-year tenure with the company. He served as Director & Vice President, Worldwide Strategic Product Development while based in the United Kingdom. In this position, he provided commercial input to Drug Discovery and Development for CNS and Gastrointestinal therapeutic areas to ensure market relevance of pipeline compounds. He led development of global commercial strategies in preparation for the launch of new products and supported country operations toward maximization of the company's existing portfolio. His teams achieved peak sales of more than $1.6 billion over a two-year period. While at SmithKline, Bob also held general management, sales and marketing positions in the key markets of the Philippines, Canada, and Spain. In each instance, his efforts spearheaded significant growth for portfolio pharmaceutical products in those regions.
Bob served on the Board of Directors of Intercept Pharmaceuticals and LifeCell Corporation. He currently serves as Independent Director of NuPathe, Inc., located in Conshohocken, PA, and serves as Trustee of The Westtown School.
Bob attended Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where he earned a B.A. degree in Spanish and History. He earned his MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where his studies focused on Marketing and International Business.
Joseph M. Mahady Independent Director
Joseph M. Mahady was named to the Board of Directors of EKR Therapeutics in November 2011 as an independent director. Mr. Mahady brings deep strategic and operational expertise in the pharmaceutical industry. He joined the EKR Board after a 30-year career at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a Fortune 110 pharma/biotech company. During his tenure at Wyeth, Joe served in various leadership roles culminating with President of Wyeth's $20 billion pharmaceutical business. Wyeth was a global leader in the fields of small molecules, vaccines, biotechnology, and infant nutritionals.
Joe was a director of the Immunex Corporation prior to its acquisition by Amgen. He is a past Chair of the National Pharmaceutical Council, and a past board member of The University of the Sciences, Project Hope, the Radnor Education Foundation and the Healthcare Institute of New Jersey.
Joe earned his pharmacy degree from St. John's University College of Pharmacy in New York City and his Masters in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
Robert S. Whitehead Independent Director
Robert S. Whitehead was named to the Board of Directors of EKR Therapeutics in November 2011 as an independent director. Mr. Whitehead is President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder of Slate Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, where he led the firm through a successful IPO and achieved three-fold revenue growth. Bob also held senior executive roles at a number of pharmaceutical companies including Prestwick Pharmaceuticals, ZymoGenetics Inc., Dura Pharmaceuticals/Élan Pharmaceuticals, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, G.D. Searle & Company, and Marion Laboratories.
In each position, Bob was a proven entrepreneurial thinker with an ability to propel organizations from incubation to dynamic growth and profit. He is a respected leader with a commitment to excellence and has accumulated in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
He attended Temple University in Philadelphia where he graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry. In addition, he completed the Executive Development Series at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
